ability of three legume cover crops to control weeds in corn

چکیده
in order to evaluate the competitive ability of legume cover crops on interference of weeds in corn, an experiment was carried out in sari agricultural sciences and natural resources university during 2011 growing season. this research was carried out based on complete block design with three replications. treatments consisted of three cover crops including: soybean (glycine max l.), fenugreek (trigonella foenum gracu l.) and cowpea (vigna unguiculata l.) planted at two different dates (simultaneous with corn and 21 days after planting of corn), along with two controls (no weeding and weeding). in this study the competition index (ci), ability of withstand competition (awc), grain yield and morphological characteristics of corn were evaluated. the results showed significant differences in the awc and ci among the cover crops. 21 days after planting of corn for cowpea had the highest ci. at simultaneous with and 21 days after planting of fenugreek, the lowest ci (0.64 and 0.32 respectively) was observed. planting cover crops such as soybean at the simultaneous with and 21 days after planting of corn and planting cowpea after 21 days was effective in weed control and also, awc of corn was highest. generally, the results of this research showed the highest ones of 11853/13 and 11447/4 kg h-1 was achieved in control (with weeding) and the cowpea at the 21 days after planting of corn, respectively.

Differential Soil Acidity Tolerance of Tropical Legume Cover Crops
In tropical regions, soil acidity and low soil fertility are the most important yield-limiting factors for sustainable crop production. Using legume cover crops as mulch is an important strategy not only to protect the soil loss from erosion but also to ameliorate soil fertility. Information is limited regarding tolerances of tropical legume cover crops to acid soils. A greenhouse experiment wa...
متن کاملHerbicide Resistant Weeds and Crops
Modern herbicidal weed control often exploits physiological differences among plants and takes advantage of herbicide tolerance or resistance in crop plants to bring about the selective removal of susceptible weeds. The Weed Science Society of America defines herbicide tolerance as “the inherent ability of a plant to survive and reproduce after herbicide treatment” which suggests that herbicide...
متن کاملThe effects of different autumn-seeded cover crops on subsequent irrigated corn response to nitrogen fertilizer
A common crop rotation in the west Iran is wheat-fallow-corn. The fallow period after wheat harvest (during fall and winter) can lead to soil erosion, nutrient losses (e.g. nitrate leaching) and offsite movement of pesticides. This period is an ideal time to establish a cover crop. In order to investigate the effects of different autumn-bseeded cover crops on subsequent irrigated corn response ...
متن کاملLegume Cover Crops and Nutrient Cycling in Tropical Fruit Tree Production
Legume cover crops have various important effects on nutrient cycling in tropical fruit tree production: they (i) fix atmospheric N2 and may amend the soil and trees with N, (ii) recycle nutrients, and (iii) affect soil nutrient availability. Aboveground N accumulation usually is very large in legume cover crops as seen from Pueraria phaseoloides being 8 to 14 times higher than in intercropped ...

Understanding ecophysiological characteristics of corn (Zea mays L.) under winter cover crops (WCCs) can improve management and farmers’ acceptance by increasing the positive effects and decreasing the negative effects associated with their use. This study was conducted to quantify the effects of WCC on corn development, growth, and yield through the evaluation of ecophysiological characteristi...
